I bought Tank 300 because I can’t afford herdsman. Is that true?

The most well-known model in the off-road vehicle circle is undoubtedly Jeep herdsman, and it is also the recognized king of off-road vehicles.

However, since the birth of Tank 300, the most popular off-road vehicle in these three years has become a domestic car, and the sales in herdsman are even less than a fraction of Tank 300! What is the charm of tank 300? Interpreting this car from a technical point of view can give a convincing answer.

Recently, however, there is a saying circulating among the users of Tank 300. Some people say that "the users who buy Tank 300 are people who can’t afford herdsman and want to go off-road". Is this really the case?

This statement is very unfriendly and does not conform to the objective facts.

It cannot be denied that the price of Tank 300 is indeed lower than that of herdsman, but the limited edition of this car also has the option of reaching 350,000. The limited edition is often snapped up as soon as it is listed; Car users with a car purchase budget of 300,000 are "not short of money" as the saying goes, and users who choose off-road vehicles often have other cars, so it is too subjective to say that users of Tank 300 can’t afford herdsman.

Moreover, the price of imported herdsman is quite favorable, and this car is not as expensive as expected.

Is it necessary to choose herdsman on the premise that the budget is enough for herdsman and 300 tanks?

Regardless of brand feelings, at least I won’t choose herdsman.

First of all, herdsman doesn’t have that high value. The price of this car in the North American market is much lower. After conversion, the starting price is 240,000, and the main version is around 300,000. The actual positioning is actually the same as that of Tank 300.

Secondly, herdsman’s off-road capability, power reserve and quality control level are not superior to those of Tank 300, but are at a disadvantage in quality performance.

Judging the value of off-road vehicles should be analyzed from three angles, namely:

  2. Engine and gearbox
  3. reliability

Both herdsman and Tank 300 use the part-time 4wd platform, and they also have the option of timely four-wheel drive; Part-time 4wd version has front and rear axle differential locks, herdsman timely four-wheel drive version (Sahara) does not have differential locks, but tank 300 timely four-wheel drive version has the option of double locks.

If the part-time 4wd version of the two cars must find out the difference, the difference is that herdsman’s low-speed four-wheel drive mode can amplify the torque by four times, and the tank 300 is less than 2.5 times, which will make the power difference.

However, the tank 300 also has a maximum torque of 387N·m, which can reach 959.76N·m; after 2.48 times amplification. Herdsman can reach 1600N·m, and the gap does exist. However, the maximum torque of herdsman will not reach its peak until 3000 rpm, while that of tanks can reach its peak at 300-1800 rpm, so the explosive power of tank 300 is superior to that of low torque. The key point is that the maximum torque of the two cars has reached an exaggerated level, even if the maximum torque of the tank 300 is 200 ~ 300 N m lower, it is enough for off-road use; On the contrary, under the premise of sufficient power redundancy, this gap has no practical significance.

The gearboxes of both cars are 8AT of ZF, and the new model of Tank 300 Crosser is 9AT independently developed. The Stellantis Group, to which Jeep belongs, does not independently develop gearboxes.

To sum up, compared with herdsman, there is no difference in the off-road limit between the two cars. Herdsman can take the road that Tank 300 can take, and herdsman can take no road that can stop Tank 300. The power feeling in the off-road state is also quite the same. After all, they are all 2.0T engines with similar torque. Then we will finally have a look at the quality performance. Unfortunately, the failure rate of 100 cars in herdsman once exceeded 200, which was higher than that of tank 300, which means that the quality performance of tank 300 is better; Moreover, the tank 300 is a hard-top off-road vehicle, and the herdsman has the disadvantage of air leakage and water leakage.

So even if the prices of herdsman and Tank 300 overlap, Tank 300 is a more ideal option.

On the contrary, herdsman only sells 300 overlapping tanks at home, which almost doubles the price by importing, so what is the reason to choose it? It’s just that some car enthusiasts prefer American car brands, but not everyone likes overseas brands. For those who love their own brands, Tank 300 is undoubtedly the best option for off-road vehicles, and it is also the most cost-effective off-road vehicle at present. Therefore, there is absolutely no need to have a hard time with wallets. Choosing Tank 300 is actually a reflection of rational car purchase and cultural brand confidence; I think I chose Tank 300 because I can’t afford herdsman. I believe I will understand the reason.

Tank 300 is an excellent off-road vehicle.
