After Wolong earthquake, bamboo was in short supply. Hungry pandas had no choice but to eat grass (Figure)

Special topic: A major earthquake occurred in Wenchuan, Sichuan.

"There is so little bamboo that I can only eat grass."

"Someone brought us milk. It smells good."

On May 20th, the giant pandas huddled together in horror in the Panda Garden of China Conservation Giant Panda Research Center in Wolong, Sichuan. In the past, there were piles of bamboo shoots here, but now there are not a speck of them. One panda went to grab the ornamental bamboo outside the cage to eat, and another panda actually grabbed a handful of grass and stuffed it in his mouth. Due to the lack of food such as bamboo and apples, pandas can only learn to drink porridge with the help of staff.

On May 16th, shortly after resuming contact with the outside world, Sichuan Wolong Nature Reserve Administration, China Giant Panda Protection Research Center and other units jointly launched a blog "Wolong after the earthquake" on the Internet, and published first-hand information and pictures from Wolong through the Internet.

Yesterday, the relevant person in charge of Sichuan Wolong National Nature Reserve Administration accepted a reporter’s online interview and told the current situation of Wolong giant pandas.

Pity: Panda learns to drink porridge.

After the earthquake, Wolong Panda Reserve lost contact with the outside world instantly. On May 16th, shortly after resuming contact with the outside world, Sichuan Wolong Nature Reserve Administration, China Giant Panda Protection Research Center and other units jointly launched a blog "Wolong after the earthquake" on the Internet, and released the first blog named SOS. According to the log, after the earthquake, the staff and the local people have made joint efforts to safely transfer the giant panda to the safer Shawan. However, due to the special physiological function of the giant panda, it needs to eat for more than 10 hours every day and consume about 10-18 kilograms of bamboo and bamboo leaves every day. At present, the giant panda is facing a food crisis.

According to reports, the panda’s food requires freshness, and it is basically transported from the outside every day. The food stored in the center can be eaten by pandas for two or three days at most. At the same time, because of the power failure, the food such as bamboo and bamboo shoots stored in the refrigerator is easy to deteriorate, which affects the panda’s consumption … After the news was fed back to Chengdu, a rescue operation for Wolong Panda began.

On May 16th, chengdu research base of giant panda received urgent instructions from the State Forestry Administration, Sichuan Provincial Forestry Department and other departments, and prepared 2,500 kilograms of bamboo, 2,000 kilograms of bamboo shoots, 100 kilograms of steamed corn bread, 1,000 kilograms of apples and 200 kilograms of panda-specific milk powder for Wolong Giant Panda in the shortest time, and delivered them to Wolong Center on May 18th. On the 18th, the rescue team organized by lookpanda website also took a batch of food and materials on the road and arrived on the 20th. According to the members of the rescue team, although they were psychologically prepared before, they were shocked by what they saw. In the panda park, the giant pandas huddled together in horror. In the past, there were piles of bamboo shoots here, but now there are not a speck of them. A panda goes.

Grasping the ornamental bamboo outside the cage to eat, another panda actually grabbed a handful of grass and stuffed it in his mouth. According to the staff of the center, due to the lack of food such as bamboo and apples, the giant panda can only learn to drink porridge with the help of the staff. It is understood that the giant pandas in Wolong are in urgent need of arrow bamboo, bamboo shoots, carrots, special milk powder and other foods.

Thrilling: taking risks to save pandas

When the earthquake occurred on May 12th, Hu Jin of lookpanda website was in the breeding ground of Wolong Giant Panda Research Center, recording the playing scenes of eight Olympic giant pandas with DV. Suddenly, Hu Jin felt that the earth was shaking, which became more and more severe. "The opposite mountain fell down with a bang, and the soil was mixed with leaves. It suddenly became dark and even people could not see clearly. Staff and tourists rushed out. The person in charge of the center organized the evacuation of tourists and female employees while organizing male employees to rescue the pandas. "

Hu Jin said that because the farm was close to the mountain, the cracked boulder destroyed many pens with backers. The staff rushed into the farm at risk, anesthetized the giant pandas in these pens and moved them to safer pens by the river, and rescued 14 giant pandas born in 2007 from the farm.

After some intense rescue, all the 63 captive giant pandas in Wolong Center were safely rescued except for three missing. Five days later, the missing panda "Yuanyuan" returned to the base, and there are still two missing.

Ask for help: there is a serious shortage of materials

Liu Shengli, deputy director of the Wolong National Nature Reserve Administration, said in an interview yesterday that the earthquake destroyed a large number of research equipment and giant panda captivity facilities in Wolong Giant Panda Research Center, and the center urgently needed a large number of materials such as mobile homes, tents or materials that can be used to build simple tents (such as advertising cloth and striped cloth), flashlights, raincoats, rain boots, emergency lights, satellite phones, disinfectant, cold medicine, compressed biscuits, ham sausage, etc. It is not enough to rely on government assistance for these gaps, and I hope to get active support from enthusiastic people from all walks of life.
